Report – Porsche to enter the coupe-SUV niche with Cayenne version

The German sports car automaker has famously increased tremendously its sales via the Cayenne sport utility vehicles – and now they are allegedly looking for new business opportunities in the coupe-SUV niche.

The new Cayenne Coupe should rival two established competitors – the BMW X6 and the newly minted Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, and arrive on the market before the end of the decade. The move also comes hot on the heels of reports concerning the apparition of a Range Rover Sport Coupe. The Cayenne Coupe would use the basis of the new generation 2018 Cayenne and thus share many of its components, including its beefier powertrains. The setup for the next generation Cayenne should pack turbocharged petrol and diesel options, as well as a hybrid variant and a reported electric powertrain, which could be the same as the one used in the Porsche Mission E concept.

The latter version could go head to head with the reported choice of powertrain for the Range Rover Sport Coupe, which could arrive in the green form to cope with increasingly stricter global emissions regulations. And with Porsche delivering a production version of the Mission E, it’s not farfetched seeing the powertrain trickle down to other models in the range. Porsche could also snatch the technology of the Audi Q6 e-tron, which is expected on the market in 2018. The powertrain choice is very relevant, as the electric model would actually have stiff competition – the Tesla Model X is already on sale around the globe.
