Report – Mercedes green assault could include up to nine electric models

According to the latest rumor off the mill, Mercedes’ reported green strategy could span between six and nine models – tasked to compete with Tesla and VW’s upcoming eco roster.

Apparently the company has plans to put on the market at least six electric cars, with up to nine being considered. The reports about Mercedes’ green future have the six electric cars that have already been approved coming out between 2018 and 2024. More interestingly, Mercedes is also allegedly working on a plug-in hybrid SUV that will combine a combustion engine and an electric motor powered by fuel cells. It’s unknown at this point if it’s the GLC F-Cell which has been presented in prototype form and will be ready for production next year.

Until any of the new green models arrive, Mercedes will deliver a concept for an electric vehicle at the end of the month during the Paris Motor Show. It will be used as a promoter for the brand’s green aspirations and rumors further point out the ecological versions will be reunited under a new “MEQ” subbrand. Apparently the Mercedes green cars will all see the use of the ‘EQ’ prefix in their names, with trademarks for numerous names such as ‘EQA’, ‘EQB’, ‘EQS’, and ‘EQX’ already registered. The new electric vehicles are also slated to be produced on their own bespoke platform – codenamed ‘Electric Vehicle Architecture’ – with two of them destined to compete with the Tesla Model S and Model X crossover.
